The appreciation and love of flowers is universal. But our choice of wedding flowers is based on more than personal preference. Consider the cost, what’s in-season, the scent, allergies and the meaning behind each flower. They even take on different meanings according to colour; the red rose symbolizes love – not a surprise – but the white rose represents purity and chastity, the yellow rose, joy and friendship and the pink rose speaks of gentle emotions. Just consider the role flowers play in our day-to-day lives. We give and receive them to acknowledge special occasions. We plant our gardens. We care for houseplants. Many shoppers pick up a few fresh flowers at the supermarket every week, along with their groceries. This acknowledgement of their importance in our lives is never expressed more strongly than at weddings. The bouquets, pew ends, the stands at the altar, the table centres at the reception – these are central to the ambience we create on that special day.
